We lived at Maroubra beach in Sydney for around 5 months and it was a beautiful coastal suburb. Our house was a stone’s throw from a man-made rock-pool and a 5 minute walk down to the beach. It was been completely idyllic. We wanted to shout about Maroubra as we loved living there. The slower pace of life and beautiful ocean views felt a world away from London which was exactly what the doctor ordered.
Maroubra Beach in Sydney will always have a little place in our hearts…
Maroubra was known for The Bra Boys, a formidable surfer gang who were street rulers and amazing surfers. They spent their time reigning supreme on the beach and gaining some serious credibility in local surfing competitions. Its beach is well known in the surfing world and is a popular training ground for esteemed surfers. In fact, the name Maroubra originates from an aboriginal word that means ‘like thunder’ – it describes the sound of the powerful waves crashing against the rocks on the beach. Hence, making it the perfect surfing spot.
Less busy than it’s neighbour Coogee and not as touristy as Bondi, it is a perfect in-between taste of Sydney life. Its beautiful and large sandy strip is cushioned by a few laid-back cafes, a local fish & chip joint, a newsagents and a handful spots to grab an evening meal.
It’s not overflowing in choice but it’s enough and that’s the whole point. There’s a real sense of community here and definitely an ‘everyone-knows-everyone’ vibe. A very cool surfer suburb which we very much enjoyed living in.
